Nearly everyone suffers from acne; in fact statistics from AAD suggest that roughly 85% of the entire American population is affected with the skin disease. Acne affects both males and females and there is currently no cure for it.
Most people can relate to acne being present on faces and perhaps backs, but it is possible to get acne on any part of the skin (all the skin tissues that have pilosebaceous units).
Acne is generally thought to apply to teenagers with puberty-related issues. While acne is more common for those in their teens, acne can and does occur in infants and adults. Acne infantilis is the term used for acne that grows on newborn babies, on the other hand acne rosacea is generally related to acne for adults.
Non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory acne are the 2 classifications of acne. Closed comedones and open comedones, commonly known as whiteheads and blackheads, fit under the non-inflammatory classification. Papules, pustules (pimples) and nodules (cysts) fit under the inflammatory classification.
Acne can cause scars, particularly from severe acne (such as nodules) or from people picking, squeezing or popping their acne. This is why it is important to treat acne as soon as possible.
Acne can cause psychological problems. People can be very conscious of how they look, so acne can make people lose self-esteem that can carry on for the rest of their lives. This is another reason why it is important to cure acne as early as possible.
